As we learned about the National FFA Organization in class, students learned about the many benefits of the FFA and agriculture. 2013 was celebrated as the "Year of the Farmer." During the superbowl that year there was a commercial entitled, "So God made a farmer." Focusing on the traits of a farmer and the traits and experiences of FFA members, students might enjoy the following videos. Again, the video was a commercial during the Superbowl.

Backyard Habitat - on a 1/2 sheet of paper show how you can create a
backyard habitat in your yard. You must show how you are naturally providing
all 4 elements of a habitat. Example: Bird - cover = bushes & trees, water
= bird bath, food = plants with seeds, space = the yard. A bird feeder would
not be acceptable because it doesn't fill itself. It would eventually run
out.
Endangered Species Zoo - visit www.earthsendangered.com Select an area (Africa, Austrailia,
Europe, etc.). Click on 5 animals to include in your "Endangered Species Zoo."
Copy information to include: Name, Scientific Name, Size, Habitat, and an
Interesting Fact. On paper, draw a zoo including the 5 animals. The zoo must
have 5 endangered species, include a picture, use color, have ticket prices
(entrance fee), and the information about the animals. The information can be
displayed in a chart on the back of the paper. Be creative.
Plant Functions - Make a printer paper
size poster showing an item that does the same job as the plant part.
Some plant parts have up to 4 jobs. Pick one part of the plant listed below. Choose an item to represent each job of that plant
part. An example for Roots function #1 is a sponge because a sponge
absorbs water.
A. Stem
1. Channel for the transportation of water, minerals, and sugar from the roots to the leaves to the rest of the plant
2. Support buds and leaves
B. Roots
1. Absorb water and nutrients from soil
2. Anchor the plant to the ground
3. Support the stem structure
4. Store food (energy) for the plant
C. Leaves
1. Site of photosynthesis (Energy factory for the plant)
2. Provide a large surface area to increase the absorption of sunlight
3. Major site of plant transpiration (diffusion of water, carbon dioxide, and oxygen to and from the plant)
D. Flower
1. Reproduction
2. Color and fragrances have evolved to attract pollinators
3. Can contain male (stamen) and/or female (pistil) parts
E. Fruit
1. Protects the seed
2. Assists in the dispersal of seeds (by attracting animals that may eat the fruit and disperse the seed)
F. Seed
1. Contain the embryo which will germinate and become a new plant
2. Protected by a seed coat to protect from moisture and extreme conditions
3. Contains the endosperm which is a food supply for the embryo during germination
Personal Emblem Develop an emblem
to represent yourself. It must contain at least 5 symbols to represent 5 things
that are important to your life. It must use color. It also needs 5 sentences
explaining the symbols (1 sentence per symbol). It is worth a total of 80
points.
